Xie Tian Gong Temple, Phnom Penh Cambodia

For several hundred years our Chinese descendants live in Cambodia, and actively contribute to the industrious undertaking through participation in the country economic development. The Cambodia Fujian Clan Association was established in 1992, with the support of local as well as oversea Chinese, Xie Tian Gong 協天宮 Temple was established two years later.

In 2004, I was invited by the Association to conduct a Thanksgiving Ritual during the Manifestation Day of the Prince of Guan Peng, one of a pantheon of deities in the Guan Tek Gong Temple. During the ceremony, I was interviewed by a Cambodian Chinese newspaper reporter and I shared with him that Confucianism & Buddhism as well as Daoism have a common thought and in consistency with our belief. There is a common saying that every Chinese wears a Confucian cap, a Taoist robe and a Buddhist sandal. A famous Chinese writer Lu Xun 魯迅 ever said that Taoism and our Chinese culture cannot be separated. We must receive ancestors' lofty aspiration, devote to carry forward the Chinese practice, our several thousand year tradition should not eliminate, and to promote every corners of the world so that more people could understand Taoism.

Last year, upon the official completion of the Statue of Ksitgarbha Bohhisattva which located at Fujian Clan Association Chinese Cemetery in Kampong Spue Province of Cambodia, I was once again invited by the Association to conduct a Thanksgiving Ceremony. The event was well organized with participation of not only the local but Taiwanese businessmen and their family members were also present during the ceremony.

My observation of these two events has been proven that the influence of Taoism mythology can easily be identified in Chinese art and literature. Therefore, the upright teaching of Taoism plays an important role in the hand of every concerned follower.

  1. A friend of mine has posted the following remarks and its good to share with the rest, quote:"Co-existence, understanding and respect are of mutual interests among all religious followers. Especially so on Chinese cultures and believes where the three sects are interlinked with identities of common interests. The problem arises only from minor issue when people starts to think that he is right and others are wrong or without justification of truth." by lightlingmk2

Ancestor worship is based on the belief that the bereaved family members of a deceased have a continued existence and possess the ability to influence the fortune of the living. In Chinese tradition, bereaved family members of a deceased will set up a home altar for the purpose of ancestor worship after funeral. The altar normally includes a photograph of the deceased, an inscription of its name on a memorial tablet and urn for offerings. Daily or twice-daily offerings are made to ensure the deceased has a good start in the afterlife. Necessities such as the deceased's favourite food and drink are placed on the altar. Altar is usually taken down after 49 days, the period during which the deceased is believed to be undergoing judgment in the netherworld. After that, the deceased is worshipped along with all the other ancestors of the family by inserting its name next to the patrilineal ancestors. Ancestral tablet is a piece of wood inscribed with the name of the deceased. It is kept in a small shrine at home or in the clan ancestral temple. Incense is lit before the tablet daily and offerings of food and prostrations are presented twice a month. Chinese fam
